It is never an easy task to assess, analyze or judge the ability of any Pakistan starting 11, leave alone Pakistan’s World Cup squad. There were numerous rumors about the potential 15 man squad before the official news broke out, and when it did, some rumors were surprisingly true.
A fierce, young and versatile player who has the ability to fearlessly take it to the opposition, Umar is a one of the most valuable assets in the Pakistan team. The biggest shocker of all was the omission of middle order batsman Fawad Alam.
One can possibly find no valid reason for the exclusion of Alam, who scored at an average of 70 in ODIs in 2014. What was more shocking was the clarification behind Fawad’s exclusion which stated that the Pakistani all-rounder possessed lack of physique and style in his game.
Pakistan’s batting strength in the 15 man squad looks uncertain and unpredictable like it has always been. With Younis Khan being in poor touch in ODI cricket, and Ahmed Shahzad and MisbahUlHaq losing their good touch in recent times, only add to the worrriesof a Pakistan cricket fan.
Umar Gul’s exclusion was explainable and justifiable, given the player’s poor form and fitness level over the last 2 years. Guldozer was replaced in the squad by 30 year old bowler Sohail Khan, who has been impressive in first class cricket, as of late. Pakistan’s bowling attack looks nowhere near as convincing as the one in the last World Cup.
Losing both SaeedAjmal and Muhammad Hafeez was always going to be a massive loss, Pakistan also have various other issues in the bowling department. WahabRiaz, as we all know, can be very expensive. EhsanAdil is a rookie, no one knows how he would adjust to the immense pressure of the World Cup.
Junaid Khan and Muhammad Irfan are exceptional with the bowl but also exceptional with getting injuries. Both talented Pakistani seamers are quite injury prone, as they’ve shown in recent times. The exclusion of FawadAlam was perhaps the most controversial call, although it was cushioned slightly by HarisSohail and Umar Akmal making the squad. Like Fawad.
